We Don’t Need Artificial Intelligence. We Need a Tribe.
Ants that build their nests high in the crown of a tree instead of near the trunk when a storm is coming. Bees that pull down into the ground just before a cyclone arrives. A north wind among the Kalenjin-Sabiny in Uganda that announces heavy rain, an east wind that means drought. Weather stations are technological giants. They translate everything into numbers. These people, though, have observed, felt, and passed down intelligent life for generations.
That is the starting point of a new study by Conservation International, published in June 2026: 49 interviews with Indigenous experts from 43 communities across all six inhabited continents. It was already known that Indigenous and traditional territories store a disproportionate share of Earth’s carbon, a third of the world’s irrecoverable carbon, and provide habitat for most of its land mammals. What had barely been studied was why. This is the first study to ask that question systematically.
Many conservationists quietly assume humans are the underlying problem, the less human presence, the better for nature. This study contradicts exactly that. The results happen because of continuous human presence on these landscapes. Not in spite of it. That is a finding backed by the research the authors draw on. Where these communities live, more carbon is stored in the soil than elsewhere. Their presence increases biodiversity. It does not reduce it. Naming the problem “human” misses the essential point. The problem is the culture that determines how we interact with nature. We should not want to get rid of human beings. We should get rid of the exploitative culture they live inside of.
The answer is uncomfortable for our time, because we have turned it into a race to pack everything necessary into an app. Knowledge and practice, though, are one in these communities. In our own culture, there is often a deep divide between what you know about the land and how you live with it. One respondent from Colombia put it simply: land-use planning already exists “from origin,” because the grandparents know the land and manage it according to the law of origin, so why rearrange what is already arranged.
We, on the other hand, have turned knowledge into something you extract, store, and transfer, like a raw material. That is exactly the movement I keep describing in the split between economy and ecology. Nomos, management, has come unhooked from logos, lived wisdom. And now that the scale of the ecological crisis is becoming visible, we go looking for a tool to hand that knowledge back to us. Better models. More data. Artificial intelligence.
But the study itself undercuts that hope. This knowledge was not lost because nobody wrote it down. It is threatened because the communities carrying it are threatened. 96 percent of respondents described land deliberately set aside, for spiritual or ecological reasons. But only 18.6 percent of the land Indigenous communities actually manage is legally recognized. One voice from Guyana described what that feels like: people used to watch ants to predict rain, but the pattern that observation relied on is gone now.
That is the real loss. We believe in salvation through more information, no wonder, we live in an information age after all. What is actually broken here is continuity. Knowledge that only survives in a healthy, unbroken relationship between people and place cannot be moved into a database and retrieved later. It dies with exactly that separation.
That is why artificial intelligence is useless for bringing this knowledge back too. It can describe it, the way this study does, it can point toward it. But it is only reawakened where it is perceived again in sync in the heart of a community, in a tribe, a neighborhood, a group of people in real relationship with a place, generation after generation. Algorithms only juggle an abstract, disconnected mind. An ant’s nest, by contrast, is watched by a universal consciousness, by the pulse of a heart whose own survival depends on it.
What makes this connection so powerful is precisely the absence of any medium in between. Algorithms are pulses tangled up in human technology. This kind of knowledge can only come through attentive observation of your own surroundings, through really looking. Every leaf on a tree, every small insect has a story to tell. In that moment of observation, a connection happens immediately, no screen, no device in between, straight to the being of nature, and for a moment you become one with it again.
Instead of some new, advanced artificial technology, what this study asks for most urgently is a land right rooted in nature itself. It is protecting the people who carry this knowledge so they can keep living where it is made. The IPCC’s last major report before the Paris Agreement cited Indigenous topics in only 1.6 percent of its 6566 references. Instead of calling that a mere knowledge gap, I would call it a decision about where to look.
That decision about where to look depends on the belief system you hold as true. Anyone raised inside a civilization built on ever more extraction for wealth is blind to meaningful reciprocity. To someone thinking in linear terms, turning back to ancient knowledge looks like a step backward, like strangling progress. But what if this ancient knowledge holds the true being needed to realign meaningfully with nature, and in the end with our own heart, which beats in the same rhythm nature does?
The ants are bound to a cosmic wisdom. The only question is whether we still live in a community that listens to them.

As you say, humans can work with nature if they understand it.
For some years I worked as a volunteer in a local ancient woodland. It had been 'worked' (coppiced and managed) for centuries (it was mentioned in the Domesday Book). I recently talked to someone about coppicing and they came up with the typical modern response that it ruined the wood and we needed to leave the it alone to go 'wild'. I pointed out that properly coppiced woodland creates one of the most biodiverse ecosystems possible, as it comprises such a huge range of different stages of growth and habitats.
The lives of our ancestors depended upon these woods, so they did not see them as a short term money making thing to be clear felled for a quick profit. They wanted future generations to be able to depend upon them in perpetuity and the only way to do that was to understand and work with the wood.
